The players have to DIE FOR THE SHIRT for the next 180 minutes of football

The fact of the matter is that having a proven goalscorer like Darren Bent (if that's what he actually is) is not a guarantee of success...
...I'm sure that Derek Hales, the most prolific of all Charlton front men, would tell you that his tally would not have accumulated without the service provide by Colin Powell, Mike Flanagan, Keith Peacock and the like.
Frankly, since the departure of Murphy and Smertin poor old Darren has been ploughing a lone furrow with little or no tactical awareness/ability/commitment available around him in forward areas of the pitch.
Ultimately, if you don't perform in the front third of the pitch, for whatever reason, then you dont' accumulate enough points.
That we haven't accumulated enough points is clear for all to see. The reasons why are open to debate and opinion.
We have two games left. They are against two teams of eleven players. We surely have to play them as cup-ties in which the best team on the day wins and on many occassions the favourites are undone because the underdogs raise their game.
We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
The players have to DIE FOR THE SHIRT for the next one hundred and eighty minutes of football. After their despicable performances under Reed (which, in my opinion, is where the season went totally wrong) they OWE the fans and the Club who pay them exhorbitant wages two MAJESTIC performances with heads held high.
Pardew has to send them out mentally strong and totally positive.

Re: The players have to DIE FOR THE SHIRT for the next 180 minutes of football (Score: 1) by East_Grinstead_Addick on Sunday, May 06 @ 10:22:05 BST (User Info | Send a Message) | Part of me thinks that a lot of the players will be 'going through the motions' on Monday night and consequently we'll get smashed 4-0. The players will walk off the pitch most of them ignoring the traditional end of season 'lap of honour' and if any of them did attempt it they'd probably be in for a bit of abuse from the crowd.
However there is part of me that really hopes that the players, no matter what the result, give their all. They owe it for all the reasons you say and the fact that the game is on Sky and what sort of message do they want to send to the rest of the league by the type of performance they give? That we're a bunch of limpless, gutless losers or that, yeah we know we are virtually beat, but f**k you! We can be defiant in the face of adversity and rise to the challenge.
I know that some players won't be that fussed by our relegation, they're still picking up their money each week and they'll just go and find a new club in the off-season. But Pards has got to get it into their hearts that other people suffer because they don't win games. Staff will be laid off, the fans will be dejected and the board have lost a tonne of money, if those players have any decency in their bodies then they would give everything they've got to show that, maybe just for once, they do care.
The pressure is well and truly off. I don't expect us to survive. But I just want to see desire, emotion, hunger, determination, fortitude and collectiveness in our last two Premiership games and show the rest of the league that we were once worthy of playing amongst the best and for those reasons why. |
