  My Favourite Ever Charlton Game
Posted on Wednesday, May 23 @ 11:37:52 BST by adminbabe

General Stuff The best game was the 3-4 win at Villa Park at the end of the last relegation season - and I include the play-off game in that - but because it was away and not on Sky no-one ever really remembers it. That performance perfectly summed up why I fell in love with Charlton and not another team, and why the current batch are such a disappointment.

We had to win to be in with a chance of survival going into the last game of the season. It pissed it down all afternoon and I was sat right near the front so got absolutely soaked, but I barely noticed because the game was so gripping.

We went a goal up early on thanks to a Barry OG, but Villa equalised inside about 5 minutes, and it stayed 1-1 to half time. Sir Clive then gave us the lead only for Joachim (remember him?) to equalise again.

Then Robbo grabbed one and went mental in front of the fans as he did. But Villa scored again. Next Andy Petterson had one of his Kamikaze moments and came steaming out of his area and flattened a Villa player. He was sent off and due to injuries we had no sub goalie.

Up stepped Sir Steven of Brown, his first duty being to make a full length save keep out the free kick Petterson conceded. Browny made a few other good saves and managed to keep a clean sheet for the last ten minutes.

Then we got a free kick just on the edge of their box in the 89th minute. We had to score to stay alive and much to everyone's bewilderment up stepped Danny 'Dead Eye' Mills - shocked.

Give him his dues though, Kins rolled it to him and he just got his head over it and smashed it with all his might. I was sat right behind the goal and had a brilliant view of it and it took two huge deflections which, I'm sure, under normal circumstances would've taken all the pace of the ball but Mills hit it so hard it still flew into the net.

We hung on for what was left and the celebrations in the rain were as good as any other I've experienced with Charlton.

For a week at least I thought we were invincible and that there was no-way we could go down after an effort like that. Sadly I was wrong and Sheff Wed did for us the following week, but mercifully I missed that one as I had to go North Wales on a geography field trip. I did have to share a room with two gloating Man Utd fans though cos they sealed the title the day we went down.

Remember it very well indeed! Was listening to it on the radio at work, kissing the badge on my Charlton hat screaming 'please, please' when they said that Mills was lining it up.. Needless to say I went ballistic when it went in!

Sadly for me, I didn't miss the Sheff Wed game.. was poxy!

One of the games I enjoyed most was the Norwich 4-4 at home when Leaburn and Jason Lee scored in the last couple of minutes to equalise when we were 4-2 down.. Darren Eadie had been on the rampage for Norwich.. Cracking game and the two least likely scorers popped up to save the day!

Then.. there's always Boxing Day v Chelsea!! Superb!

It was certainly one of my favourite games, even if it only kept us up for a week. 7 goals, Brownie in the sticks and a cracking last minute winner. Glorious.

Taking adavantage of the Balti triangle afterwards was a great way to celebrate too.
