Andy Reid and Next Season

IMO Andy Reid is far more effective when played in the middle of the pitch than out wide on the left. But Pardew does have a bit of a dilemma: does he play Andy Reid as a 'second striker' in behind (hopefully) Benty or Iwelumo in a 451 formation or does he play an adventurous 442 with 2 out and out strikers (Varney and Iwelumo) backed up by 2 pacy wingers (or 1 creative, 1 speedy) with Andy Reid given the playmaker role in midfield. We would require a defensively minded midfielder to sit in behind Reidy and Song would do the business wonderfully. However, can we play an adventurous 442 system week in-week out?
I suggest in those games when we are at home then yes, but a wet Wednesday night up at Burnley we're going to have to be a lot tougher and probably play 451 or at least 442 with 2 midfielders who can get back and defend. For all his abilities I wouldn't ask too much of Reid to do any defending.
For me there is another question mark hanging over whether Reid can play as an effective 'second striker' behind the main target man in a 451 formation. That is his 'break away' speed. I remember when we played Watford at home, a good half dozen times Andy Reid found himself in space with the ball 45 yds from Watford's goal, but time and again the Watford defence stayed very deep allowing Reid time but because he can't get moving to full pace very quickly the Watford midfield had plenty of time to get back, get into position, and thwart our attacks. For me it was one of the most frustrating thing of the afternoon. If a pass isn't on for him to make (ie. the main target man in front of him marked by 2-3 defenders) then Reid doesn't have the pace to run at teams - by contrast when we had ZZ for the second half of the season he could run at teams from deep because of his superior pace.
I am a bigger fan of 442 than I am of 451 but I prefer 442 with two equally balanced central midfielders rather than 1 who will play as a playmaker and 1 who will play as a defensive midfielder. Curbs always tried to pick together 2 box to box midfielders, albeit one of them would sit slightly deeper but when the team is struggling you've got another midfielder in there who can get back and help out. As much as I like Andy Reid, I don't trust him to help out defending and I would fear Song (or whoever) would be isolated.
Also the partner for Reid in that defensive midfield role has to be very competent. If anyone is thinking of putting Faye, Holland or Huges to partner Reid in central midfield forget it. Not one of them is competent enough to sit, defend properly and accurately distribute the ball.
However saying all that I am encouraged that it looks like we are going to play some very offensive football next season - we certainly might as well, no-one ever won the league without scoring goals :)
