  CAFC vs Braga

General Stuff So I went to the game today against Jorge's boys. Not sure if their side was full strength - remember it's two weeks until their domestic league starts - but considering they're a UEFA Cup team I thought we did OK.

Defence was alright and you can't really say that...

...their goals were due to defensive errors: the own goal was unfortunate and it's hard to stop free kicks when the player taking them is a set piece specialist (and judging by the way he hit the ball, he'd clearly been practising).

I'm glad I've now seen Moutouakil play for myself, and can vouch for all those who sang his praises previously; he's fast, aware of what's going on around him, doesn't panic when one-on-one against an attacker and times both tackles and headers very well.

Paddy and Boughie did alright as the defensive pairing and I assume that means Pards is resigned to the fact that Dia is on his way. This assumption was backed-up by the fact that Fortune came on in the second half; maybe he will be staying (or just going to Stoke on loan) rather than a proper transfer?

In terms of the 'keeper, Weaver didn't really impress and at one Braga corner he was lucky their attacker missed the ball by a whisker otherwise we'd have lost 3-1.

Midfield was also alright, although I mean that in the sense that they didn't do anything badly, but neither was anything particularly spectacular either.

Reid was captain but frustrating in that some of his passing was incisive but just as much was hopelessly wayward.

Semedo was tidy but didn't really shine.

Sinclair was unfortunately a bit anonymous and on today's performance won't be starting next week.

Ambrose was impressive, covering a lot of ground (although still not really putting any tackles in) and he had a good chance in the first half although he should have played the pass rather than taking a shot. I'm still not sure whether he's a winger though, and he did come inside quite often.

Big Chris was hard-working and managed to put himself around a bit, make himself open for passes and won quite a few knock-ons in the air.

Todorov unfortunately didn't impress me and I really hope he's saving himself for the season proper otherwise he will be the new JFH.

In terms of substitutes, Marcus actually surprised me (at least when he first came on) as he seemed full of running and was also pretty determined to make his physical impression felt.

Faye was pretty abject and I can't really maintain hopeful that "he'll come good soon" for much longer.

Sam came on and played out on the right but didn't really do much in his cameo role; the same goes for Christensen on the left although I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and trust that he plays better on his natural (AFAIK) right flank.

Chris Dickson also came on in the second half and I was impressed by his running and determination; I'm not sure he's the finished article yet but the hunger is definitely there and hopefully he'll improve as his potential suggests he will.

On a final note, whilst I think the defence was OK and coped with most of Braga's (quite limited) attacks, I was disappointed that attacking-wise we didn't really manage much. That our one goal came from a set piece (albeit a well-taken one) speaks volumes and we didn't really muster up much else. Some nice passing play in the final third was pleasing, especially given our "hoof it and see" tactics in recent seasons, but this rarely came to anything you could describe as a real chance on goal.

I'm hoping that the players were perhaps not trying their hardest, seeing as we're so close to the start of the season, and that perhaps they were outclassed by superior opposition. Whilst I remain confident for the season ahead, judging by today's performance we're not just going to stroll to automatic promotion.
